A Number of Injured as Rough Air Strikes Delta Flight Arriving in Sydney, Australia

A number of individuals have been injured following a Delta Airlines flight traveling from Los Angeles to Sydney experienced significant turbulence on Friday morning.

The flight, numbered 41 "encountered brief turbulence" as it made its approach and landed at the Sydney airport, an airline spokesperson informed. A number of the onboard staff required medical attention.

The New South Wales Ambulance Service stated they evaluated five patients, and transported three of them to a medical facility with non-life-threatening injuries that comprised spinal discomfort and head pain. The injured were between their thirties and seventies.

The event represents the latest incident of commercial jets encountering atmospheric disturbance, with experts saying that climate change is a significant contributor.

There were 245 passengers and 15 crew members on the Airbus A350, the representative added, adding that the plane arrived "safely and normally" at Sydney Airport at shortly before 7 a.m. on Friday.

In 2024, passengers and crew on a Singapore Airlines jet experienced a harrowing brief five-second of severe turbulence. One passenger passed away and dozens were injured, as those without seatbelts were thrown from their seats and were slammed back.

In-flight turbulence is a common occurrence while flying, and while occurrences of rough conditions are reportedly becoming more frequent, they are still very rare.

Estimates show that there are an estimated 5,000 incidents of severe or worse turbulence annually, out of a overall number of in excess of 35 million flights that now take off worldwide.
