Anthony Barry Shares The Philosophy: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

Ten years back, Barry was playing at a lower division club. Now, he's dedicated supporting the England manager secure World Cup glory next summer. His path from athlete to trainer commenced as an unpaid coach coaching youngsters. He remembers, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and it captivated him. He realized his destiny.

Rapid Rise

The coach's journey has been remarkable. Commencing as Paul Cook’s assistant, he built a reputation through unique exercises and excellent people skills. His stints with teams led him to elite sides, while also serving in roles with national teams for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include legends including world-class talents. Now, with England, he's fully immersed, the peak as he describes it.

“Dreams are the starting point … However, I hold that dedication shifts obstacles. You have the dream then you break it down: ‘What's the process, gradually?’ We aim for World Cup victory. But dreams won’t get it done. It's essential to develop a methodical process that allows us to have the best chance.”

Focus on Minutiae

Passion, focusing on tiny aspects, is central to his philosophy. Toiling around the clock day and night, the coaching duo push hard at comfort zones. The approach include psychological profiling, a plan for hot conditions ahead of the tournament in North America, and fostering teamwork. He stresses the national team spirit and dislikes phrases such as "break".

“This isn't a vacation or a pause,” Barry says. “We needed to create an environment that the players want to be part of and they're pushed that it’s a breather.”

Ambitious Trainers

The assistant coach says and the head coach as “very greedy”. “We want to dominate every aspect of the game,” he states. “We strive to own the entire field and that’s what we spend many of our days on. We must not only to stay ahead with developments but to surpass them and create our own ones. It's an ongoing effort to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“There are 50 days with the players prior to the World Cup. We have to play a sophisticated style that offers a strategic upper hand and we have to make it so clear in that period. We need to progress from thought to data to knowledge to execution.

“To develop a process enabling productivity during the limited time, we must utilize all the time available from when we started. In the time we don’t have the players, it's vital to develop bonds among them. We must dedicate moments in calls with players, we have to see them in stadiums, feel them, touch them. If we limit ourselves to that time, we have no chance.”

Final Qualifiers

Barry is preparing for the final pair of World Cup qualifiers – versus Serbia in London and away to Albania. They've already ensured their place at the finals after six consecutive victories and six clean sheets. Yet, no let-up is planned; on the contrary. This period to strengthen the squad's character, to gain more impetus.

“The manager and I agree that the style of play ought to embody all the positives about the Premier League,” Barry says. “The fitness, the versatility, the robustness, the integrity. The England jersey should be harder than ever to get but light to wear. It ought to be like a superhero's cape and not body armour.

“For it to feel easy, it's crucial to offer a style that allows them to play freely as they do in club games, that connects with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They must be stuck less in thinking and increase execution.

“There are emotional wins available to trainers in attack and defense – playing out from the back, closing down early. However, in midfield in that part of the ground, we believe play has stagnated, particularly in the Premier League. All teams are well-prepared currently. They can organize – structured defenses. Our aim is to increase tempo in that central area.”

Passion for Progress

Barry’s hunger for improvement knows no bounds. When he studied for his pro license, he was worried regarding the final talk, especially as his class included stars including former players. To enhance his abilities, he sought out tough situations imaginable to hone his presentations. One was HMP Walton locally, where he also took inmates for a training session.

Barry graduated as the best in his year, and his dissertation – focusing on set-pieces, for which he analysed thousands of throw-ins – got into print. Frank was one of those impressed and he hired Barry to his team at Stamford Bridge. When Lampard was sacked, it was telling that the team dismissed virtually all of his coaches except Barry.

Lampard’s successor with the club was Tuchel, and shortly after, they claimed the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry remained under Graham Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged in Germany, he recruited Barry away from London to work together again. English football's governing body consider them a duo like previous management pairs.
