Contaminated Seafood Issue: Indonesia Faces Contamination in Key Manufacturing Area

A significant industrial zone situated in the suburbs of the capital is addressing radioactive contamination following a government team found traces of the dangerous isotope Caesium-137 at twenty-two production facilities within the site, which includes companies shipping chilled marine products.

Emergency Measures and Product Withdrawal

The finding has led to immediate decontamination operations and the moving of nearby residents, following a comparable pollution scare in the United States that was traced back to the Indonesian facilities.

An important international store chain is among the businesses that have withdrawn items from its shelves after the finding.

Probe and Detection of Pollution

The country's authorities initiated an investigation when the US Food and Drug Administration detected Caesium-137, a radioactive substance, in a shipment of chilled breaded shrimp sent by an Indonesian company.

Officials released an warning advising distributors and retailers to dispose of the goods and avoid selling it, even though the found level was well under the agency's action limit. They noted that the amount of Caesium-137 it had detected would not present an immediate hazard to the public.

The authority stated: “The main health effect of concern after extended, repeated small amount exposure (eg through eating of polluted food or liquid over a period) is an increased chance of the disease, resulting from damage to DNA within living cells.”

Extensive Contamination and Medical Examinations

Radiation tests revealed at least twenty-two plants in the manufacturing area were contaminated. The Indonesian team did not name the twenty-one additional production sites, but said they would immediately receive cleanup processes carried out by Indonesia's nuclear agency.

The environment minister stated that people living in highly contaminated zones would be relocated until the site was cleaned, emphasizing that the safety of the inhabitants was the “main concern”.

Medical authorities also conducted checks on nearby workers and people living close to the manufacturing zone, finding nine people who showed signs for contact to Caesium-137. They were sent to a hospital before being allowed to go back.

Cleanup and Isolation Plans

The contaminated locations will right away receive cleanup operations by the national nuclear institute. Authorities have also selected the site of a scrap metal factory as an isolation center for polluted goods.

The country, which has no atomic energy facilities or weapons programme, believes that Caesium-137 may have entered the nation from abroad.

Source of Contamination and Import Limits

An official spokesperson told reporters that recycled metal imports were the likely cause of pollution and announced the government would immediately impose limits on scrap metal arrivals. He said that vehicles were also being inspected for potential contamination as they traveled through the region.

About Caesium-137 and Health Concerns

Caesium-137 is a dangerous nuclear isotope that typically appears in the ecosystem as a consequence of atomic experiments or incidents, like Fukushima or Chornobyl. Small amounts are found in earth, food and air.

The level found in the chilled shrimp was far lower than FDA action limits, but the authority stated prolonged contact to even small amounts of the element was associated to an higher risk of cancer.

Withdrawal Information

The recalled seafood was sold at large store outlets across at least a dozen American states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
