Democrats Denounce Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Death Penalty

Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced fury after Donald Trump charged a contingent of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be detained and punished "with execution" following their publication of a controversial video.

The Recording That Provoked the Controversy

The video footage, shared on Tuesday, features six Democratic elected officials who previously worked in defense or security roles.

"As we did, you all made an pledge to protect and defend this constitution," the lawmakers stated in the short video. "At present, the threats to our constitution don't only come from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our laws are unambiguous, you can decline improper directives, you can reject improper directives, you have to reject improper directives. No one has to follow commands that break the law or our national charter."

Donald Trump's Incensed Reaction

The clip reportedly trigger a furious reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.

On Thursday morning, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another post, he declared: "This is really serious, and Harmful to our Country. Their words cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a additional publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Opposition Leaders React

Following Trump's statements on that day, Top Democrats published a joint announcement censuring the statements.

"Partisan aggression has no role in this nation," they wrote. "Congress members who appeared in the video all served our United States with tremendous patriotism and distinction. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's offensive and risky calls for execution against congressional representatives, and urge House Republicans to vigorously do the same."

The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in contact with protective services "to make certain the security of these officials and their relatives."

"Donald Trump must without delay delete these radical digital publications and retract his aggressive language before he leads to violence," the declaration continued.

Representatives' Firm Response

The lawmakers who participated in the video also released a statement.

"We identify as ex-military personnel and security experts who care for this United States and took an pledge to protect and uphold the national charter of the United States," they said. "That oath is permanent, and we intend to honor it. No threat, intimidation, or call for violence will prevent us from that important duty."

"The significant point is that the president considers it punishable by capital punishment for us to repeat the law," they added. "Our service members should know that we have their support as they carry out their vow to the constitution and duty to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."

They stated: "The entire nation must come together and denounce the former president's demands for our death and ideological conflict. This is a period for moral clarity."

Additional Partisan Responses

The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's comments and shared on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is requesting the death of elected officials."

He continued: "This is an clear THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this without delay and absolutely."

The Conservative official supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "It is very harmful, you have important representatives of Congress telling military personnel to disobey orders, I think that represents unprecedented in US history."

The Conservative representative also allegedly stated to journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the crime of sedition" but that "legal experts have to analyze the wording and decide all that."

Executive Branch Reaction

During a administration briefing on that day, when inquired by a media member, "Does the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the White House press secretary replied: "Certainly not."

"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the representative stated. "You have current representatives of the federal government who worked together to orchestrate a digital communication to individuals of the US military, to serving soldiers urging them to disobey the executive's legal commands."

She said: "The integrity of our military depends on the chain of command, and if that structure is violated, it can cause casualties, it can cause confusion, and precisely what these congressional representatives ... are essentially promoting."
