Sir Gareth Southgate has stated that he is not seeking a return to football management, pointing out that it would be challenging to match the special mission he felt as England’s manager.

He expressed his plan to dedicate his efforts toward engaging young people and addressing what he described as a pervasive negative narrative presently found in the country.

Embracing New Avenues Away from Coaching

During a broadcast discussion, Southgate was questioned on rumors linking him with open coaching positions in the Premier League and other leagues.

“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he responded. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

Dedication to Positive Examples

Leading up to the release of his upcoming book, his leadership-focused book, Southgate shared that he is “very passionate” about offering guidance for young people, applying experiences from his period as England’s men’s football manager between 2016 and 2024, as well as his personal family life.

He believes that his experience managing the squad, during which the team shifted from being deeply unpopular to widely supported, holds wider relevance.

“Initially, the relationship with supporters was severely strained,” he noted. “The public viewed the players as egotistical, yet we successfully reversed that image. The squad’s ability to connect diverse communities was truly powerful.”

Parenting and Influencing Youth

Reflecting on his role as a parent, Southgate remarked: “Parents strive to offer their children a great beginning, but eventually, kids tune out. My household is no different, but I’m convinced this is a vital focus for society.”

He continued: “Currently, a pessimistic story dominates national discourse, and we must offer youth optimism and direction. The country is full of potential, but young individuals require positive influences and supportive peers, as these choices shape their futures profoundly.”

Togetherness Beyond Conflict

The former manager stressed that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the public discourse often highlights division.

“It’s understandable why people are disaffected,” he commented. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”

Southgate’s new release, the book Dear England, is set to offer deeper reflections on guidance and national identity drawn from his distinguished time in football.
