Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.

“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.

“Still unsure,” he added. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”

New York police released video stills earlier this week of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is currently under review and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt were reported.

The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday in the area between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a child.

“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd did not participate during the current season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder issue that required surgery.

He joined the Jets as a new signing in March and was projected as an important component of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on 2 August and was carted from the field.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while working his way back.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in March.
