Lando Norris Wins First Formula One Drivers' Crown in Yas Marina Despite Verstappen's Race Triumph.

With a performance full of brave racing, the McLaren driver has sealed his maiden Formula One world championship by achieving P3 at the Yas Marina race. Third place was all that was required for the British driver, even though Red Bull's Max Verstappen took the victory and his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri finished in second.

Norris executed exactly what was required in an incredibly intense contest at the Abu Dhabi track, including a series of audacious passing maneuvers, with impeccable execution from both the driver and his team.

A Historic Feat for British Motorsport and The Team

By winning his maiden world championship, Norris is now the eleventh driver from Britain to achieve this. It concludes McLaren's drivers’ championship drought, which stretched back to 2008 when Lewis Hamilton last won it. Furthermore, it had been 27 years since McLaren achieved the drivers’ and constructors’ double back in 1998.

This marks a remarkable revival for the team, from a nadir in the mid-2010s when they twice finished ninth in the standings. This resurgence has been led by boss Zak Brown and, most recently, by Andrea Stella, who has delivered an efficient team with a race-winning car.

A Tale of Two McLaren

Regarding his teammate Oscar Piastri, who had looked so strong for a large part of the campaign, there was obvious frustration at faltering in the later races. A series of poor performances and some errors, including crashing out in Baku, were expensive. Nevertheless, he finishes the season having shown he is also of champion caliber. Being so competitive in only his third year in F1, with multiple victories, remains very impressive.

Verstappen was also brilliant to force the title battle to the wire. He did all he could in Abu Dhabi with the race victory, but having come back from a significant deficit in August, he did not quite have enough to overhaul Norris, finishing just a handful of points short.

Sealing the Deal with Clinical Execution

Norris closed out his title with clinical precision to win the championship that had been so close but remained just out of grasp as McLaren struggled at the last two rounds. First a DSQ in Las Vegas and then an egregious tactical decision in Qatar.

It was a significant accomplishment for the driver in his seventh year in F1, each one with McLaren. He remained loyal to the squad even during some difficult times, convinced they would come good. That belief was rewarded in Abu Dhabi.

He has done a remarkable job to persist with his goal, keeping his composure and belief during periods under pressure. Having lost the lead to Piastri after Saudi Arabia, he nonetheless worked at getting the most from the car's potential.

The Title-Deciding Grand Prix

In the race, Verstappen held his first place through the first corner, but the three title leaders avoided contact. Piastri, starting on the more durable compound, was aggressive and made a spectacular move to go round the outside of Norris to take second place.

This demonstrated the McLarens were allowed to fight, but put Norris under pressure from the Charles Leclerc. Early pit visits saw Norris come out into traffic, but he passed rivals within a lap and displayed no signs of nerves in his race craft.

On lap 19, he made an incredibly bold move to dive past two cars in one swoop, moving up to fourth and closing on Verstappen's teammate. Red Bull instructed their driver to delay Norris, which resulted in a dramatic assault where Norris burst up the inside, almost leaving the track.

This moment was investigated by the race officials, with a few nerve-wracking laps elapsing before a penalty for his rival and no further action for Norris was decided. This decisive charge without being held up was vital to his title fight.

Contrasting Fates

As Norris was crowned the first British driver to win the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the contrast in fortunes between the two was stark. While the new generation fought for the title, Hamilton, the veteran, could only finish eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a dismal conclusion to a dismal season with Ferrari.

His first season with the Italian team had been met by enthusiasm but produced what was easily his worst season ever, finishing sixth in the championship without a podium. He has appeared jaded in the final rounds and will aim to rebuild over the off-season.
