New York Unveils Online Platform for Residents to Submit ICE Videos After Arrests of 4 American Citizens
The state AG has rolled out a recent reporting form encouraging residents to submit images and footage of federal immigration enforcement across the state. This action follows a shortly after a high-profile enforcement action shook Manhattan's Chinatown, sparking large-scale protests.
US Citizens Arrested In Enforcement Action
A US congressman revealed during a Wednesday press conference that four US citizens were detained and kept for "almost a full day" following the previous day's operation. Protests occurred in the city on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"All New York residents has the right to reside free from terror," state officials wrote in a release.
"If you witnessed and captured ICE activity recently, I encourage you to submit that evidence with us. We are dedicated to reviewing these submissions and investigating any legal breaches."
Portal Features
The form offers fields to submit images and video footage of the raid, along with a section to note where it occurred. Prior to sending, individuals must check a option that confirms that "authorities may use any evidence provided in a legal proceeding, such as in a legal proceeding or government document."
Information about the Manhattan Operation
The Manhattan operation, which onlookers say included more than 50 government officers, happened in a well-known neighborhood of Manhattan where imitation handbags, accessories, jewelry and additional items are commonly traded in large quantities – often to visitors.
Recordings of the incident reveal numerous hooded and equipped personnel securing and holding a person, and forcing aside witnesses. Crowds of locals followed the agents through the streets. An armored military vehicle was noticed traveling down the city streets.
Leadership Statements
During a midweek briefing organized with the immigrant advocacy group, Representative Goldman, a Democratic representative, said that four nationals were detained by ICE for about 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where nationals should be detained for without cause." He clarified the individuals were freed on Wednesday with no charges filed.
"The goal is evident here. It is not about removing offenders," the congressman remarked. "This is a armed campaign to create conflict. It is merely a justification to provoke conflict for the government to bring in the armed forces to prevent conflict that they have created."
Extensive Outcry
Fury over the immigration operation rapidly grew – each of the political contenders criticized the raid, as did the state leader.
"Yet again, the federal government opts for oppressive displays that create fear, not safety. It has to end," one mayoral candidate wrote.
NYC advocacy organizations expressed outrage also.
"Federal officers raided the neighborhood with military-style vehicles, covered personnel and tactical gear to focus on small merchants attempting to earn income. This operation had no connection to citizen protection and was entirely about frightening communities and communities," stated the head of a advocacy group.
Agency Rules
ICE policy forbids the arrest of American nationals and the agency has said it will not take into custody citizens. Yet, external research has discovered that numerous citizens have been held against their will by ICE since the beginning of the current administration.
Recent Pattern
Immigration operations have been rising in frequency in NY and around the country this year.
A recent action in the city center was the initial documented operation on an immigrant shelter of the existing leadership. Rallies opposing immigration enforcement are widespread as are claims of force and inhumane treatment.
Most recently, a document submitted by legal entities stated medical neglect of pregnant women in government custody.
