Prison Shock: Brazil's FormerPresident Bolsonaro Confronts Life in Prison
He contested the law and the legal system triumphed.
A couple of months after being handed a quarter-century plus sentence for trying to “eradicate” the nation's democracy, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro now seems headed to prison.
Imminent Imprisonment
The found-guilty plotter – who's been subject to residential detention in his residence while a number of court processes and appeals unfold – is broadly anticipated to be incarcerated in the next few days, amid growing rumors that he will be transferred to a notorious top-security prison.
Past Remarks on Inmates
Over Bolsonaro’s four-decade public life, the right-wing ex- military man showed minimal sympathy for the country's inmates.
“Why should we give these lowlifes a comfortable existence?” he once pondered. “They deserve to be fucked, full-fucking-stop. That’s what I reckon.”
On another occasion, Bolsonaro stated: “If you don’t want to wind up in prison, all you have to do is not sexual assault, abduction or theft.”
Prison Facility Discussion
However the prospect of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda prison high-security prison in Brasília has appalled supporters, several of whom this week visited the prison in an apparent bid to discourage the high court from banishing him there.
The senator, a politician from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was one of the visitors, claimed he anticipated the 70-year-old leader to be jailed in the coming fortnight and was concerned his location could be Papuda.
The senator argued Bolsonaro’s severe gut issues – the consequence of a near-fatal assault during the last election race – implied it would be dangerous to keep the former president there. “His [health] situation is very grave. He cannot to manage if they move him to Papuda … It could be terrible,” he added, who also voiced anxiety about overcrowded cells and the condition of jail cuisine.
When inspecting Papuda, Lucas recalled seeing cells accommodating four dozen prisoners: “It's almost one square meter per prisoner.
“We conversed to the convicts and they complain, of course, of the awful cuisine,” remarked the senator.
Allies React
He is not the only voice speaking out ahead of the ex-leader's predicted imprisonment.
Writing in a major newspaper, a different supporter, the former government official Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “harsh” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” political career and claimed Brazil was about to see “the largest unfairness in its history”.
“It is an unfairness that erodes the souls of millions Brazilian citizens,” the former minister said.
Divided Public Reaction

However his anticipated jailing has also pleased the hearts of millions individuals who believe he ought to be imprisoned for conspiring to block the incoming president from assuming office – and even conspiring to have him assassinated.
Congressman Otoni, a congressman for the incumbent leader's allied group, commented: “Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be put in a dark cell. Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be placed in isolation. Not a soul desires Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We desire him to obtain respectful care – but proper treatment in prison. He must not persist being his personal jailer for his entire life.”
The congressman noted how Bolsonaro backers, who have spent years celebrating the tough treatment of inmates, had unexpectedly woken up to their rights. “Only now has the extreme right – which has repeatedly claimed that civil liberties are not for lawbreakers – opted to tour a jail to discover what circumstances are really like,” he remarked.
“Bolsonaro is a criminal,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he merited “degrading, degrading handling”.
Potential Prison Facilities
Despite rumors that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which currently houses about thousands of inmates, his probable assigned facility seems to be a nearby penitentiary for police officers and other “particular” prisoners known as Papudinha (Little Papuda).
Its cells are considerably more adequate than those in the main prison, although nonetheless a far cry from the opulence Bolsonaro experienced while occupying the spectacular presidential palace, about a short distance away.
As per sources, the accommodation Bolsonaro could expect to reside in in Papudinha is about 260 square feet – roughly the dimensions of vehicle spaces – and features a 12 sq metre bathroom with a water facility and a 12 square meter veranda. “Bolsonaro would be allowed to have a television and additionally a cooler in his quarters as long as they were provided by his loved ones,” information indicated.
Ideological Reactions
The lawmaker denounced the rumoured plan to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “a type of payback” on the part of the presiding magistrate who oversaw Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will determine his fate in the {
