Taliban Employed Discarded UK Technology to Find Afghans Who Worked Alongside Allied Forces, Inquiry Is Told

A whistleblower has told a parliamentary probe that British authorities failed to secure sensitive equipment allowing the Taliban to track down local individuals who worked with international military.

Information Leak Puts Thousands in Danger

Person A, identified as Person A, stated that Afghans affected by the information breach were advised to change residences and change their phone numbers to ensure their safety from the ruling authorities.

Lawmakers are looking into the UK government's response of a catastrophic disclosure of confidential data affecting approximately 19k individuals who had applied to relocate to Britain to avoid the regime.

The Information Breach Happened

A data file with private information, including identities, addresses and sometimes relative details, was inadvertently disclosed by an official employed at British military command in last year.

The incident was discovered in late 2023, when the names of nine people who had sought to settle in the UK were posted on social media.

Taliban Capabilities

Many believe there's a false assumption that militant forces do not have the same sort of facilities that allied forces use,” Person A informed lawmakers.

“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; they have it. Once they acquire your phone number, they are able to track your precise location. That is what specialized teams accomplished.”

During testimony about regarding if authorities owned necessary encryption, the source confirmed: “They've got everything.”

Aftermath of the Security Lapse

Initial findings presented to the investigation indicated that approximately fifty relatives and colleagues of Afghans affected by the incident had been executed.

A superinjunction regarding the incident was implemented in August 2023 and prevented relevant facts regarding the matter from being made public until mid-2025.

Safety Measures

Given injunction limitations, the whistleblower and the aid group she was working with informed Afghan families they were supporting that they had “concerns that certain devices had been intercepted”.

“Our suggestion was that they relocate when possible and altered their contact details. Those were the primary information that, should militant forces had access to these details, would cause their location being found,” Person A explained.

Contested Findings

The source disputed that internal investigation carried out by an ex-government employee had been mistaken to state that the possession of the dataset by militant forces was “minimally impact present danger”.

“The thing to remember is that these Afghans are not standing up to the authorities; they remain concealed. The primary issue involves past work history.”

The source explained disturbing treatment experienced by at-risk Afghans, including electrocution, simulated drowning, and violent assaults.

“We have had young kids who have had limbs fractured to try to get the family to disclose hiding places,” she testified.
