The British designer Antony Price, the visionary style architect responsible for some of the most iconic looks worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.

His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, including the light-hued ensembles that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."

This news arrives less than a month after he presented his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in designing body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "genuine original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

During the nineties, he commenced designing ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as various looks for her tour of the United States following her marriage.

After a career spanning more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The industry mourns the loss to a authentic original whose influence on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
