The Golden State is Completely Free of Drought for the First Time in Two and a Half Decades.

After a quarter-century span, not a single part of the state is enduring dryness. This landmark event comes on the heels of challenging years marked by insufficient rainfall that intensified fire dangers and challenged its enormous farming industry.

An Update Reveals Zero Abnormally Dry Areas

A recent update from the U.S. Drought Monitor confirmed that the entire state is free from dry or drought conditions. This change resulted from weeks of heavy precipitation that replenished major reservoirs like Shasta and Oroville well above their long-term norms.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve always lived in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” remarked a climate scientist.

Following Powerful Weather to Soggy Celebrations

The path to this point included powerful and fatal winter storms that battered the state in recent years, leading to extensive inundation, blackouts, and deaths. Even though those events began to alleviate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.

Even into late December, regions like Modoc County were deemed abnormally dry. Subsequent downpours at the start of the new year finally erased those last vestiges of dryness.

A Crucial Snowpack Is Below Average

However, authorities caution that the end of drought status should not be confused with being out of the woods. Latest data of the mountain snow accumulation indicate it is approximately 70 percent of the typical level.

This snowpack, which accounts for approximately 30% of the state's water supply as it thaws later in the year, is a critical factor for future water availability. Water officials stress that it is not yet time to determine the outlook for the months ahead.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” explained a hydrology section chief. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to pick up by 1 April so that we’re nearer to normal.”

Although the monitor shows a clean slate, the next challenge is to sustaining this positive water situation throughout the months to come.
