The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a contemplative talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Executive Acclaim

The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky appeal.

"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this lovable family go about their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to evolve comedy past its current layer of irony. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.

“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

The Path Forward

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to enjoy the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
