Zohran Mamdani confirms his intention to reside in the iconic Gracie Mansion
NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue throughout his run for office.
A Traditional Abode
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for most New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.
However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central policy, was not quick to announce this decision immediately after his electoral win in November.
"My choice came down to the security of my family and the importance of directing my complete efforts on carrying out the platform on affordability the city's residents voted for," Mamdani said on Monday.
A Fond Farewell
His home was in Astoria, Queens, an area famous for its abundance of cultural enclaves and global cuisine.
"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for showing us the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"While I may no longer live in Astoria, the community will always live inside me and the work I do," he affirmed.
Political Debate
During his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his central policy – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.
Yet his opponents, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he is from a famous family.
Previous Exceptions
Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side during his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a venue for civic gatherings, and advocated for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will experience an environment very different than his previous Astoria home.
Adorned in cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.
Internally, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's original era.
The estate, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
His former home is rent-stabilized, which means the city sets limits on how much landlords can increase rent each year.
Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the housing expenses outpaces the means of many residents.
Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
